About the class
Discover the sharp, angular, and dynamic side of Italic calligraphy in this live Zoom workshop. Go beyond standard forms as you learn to create striking contrasts between daring strokes and refined details. You’ll gain hands-on experience with lively, expressive writing, sophisticated, built-up letters, and unique gothic-inspired variations.
When: Wednesdays – June 17, June 24, and July 1, 2026.
Time: 6:00 PM CEST (UTC+2). Each session lasts 2h 15m.
Recordings: Full access to all replays for 3 months.
Level: All levels are welcome, though class might be challenging for complete beginners.
Homework: After the first and second classes, you'll receive the homework assignment with a possibility of a brief review.
Materials: PDF handouts will be sent before the first class.
Dynamic
During lesson 1, we'll explore the minuscule alphabet and the core ideas behind creating dynamic, sharp, and angular letterforms. We'll address specific technical challenges, focusing on proper spacing and mastering the rhythm necessary to keep your writing consistent.
Elegant
During lesson 2, we'll focus on the majuscules, learning how to build up the strokes and further utilize pen manipulation. We'll also explore the concept of dynamic balance in our compositions by manipulating the forms of the capitals and playing with their relationship to the minuscules.
Creative
In lesson 3, we'll dive into advanced variations by adjusting overall stroke weight, proportions, and introducing a gothic flavor inspired by Blackletter scripts. Finally, we'll bring your writing to life by practicing rhythmic 'dancing letters' and creating an energetic, agitated style.
Curriculum
About me
I’m a designer, letter artist, and calligrapher based in Katowice, Poland. I’m also an academic teacher at the Graphic Design Department of the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice. In 2022, I earned my Ph.D. for my work on methodology and visual systems for teaching calligraphy to graphic design students.
I conducted numerous live calligraphy workshops in Poland and other locations, including Rome, Helsinki, Bratislava, Zaragoza, and Zlín, to name a few. Additionally, since 2016, I have conducted regular calligraphy workshops for the Academy’s students. I’ve been running online classes for five years now, having the opportunity to work with students from all over the world.
