About the class
Explore Fraktur in this live Zoom workshop, from its characteristic lowercase letters to lively, elaborate capitals. We’ll work through the strokes and construction of the letters, then bring them together through spacing and rhythm. In the final session, we’ll explore variations in proportion, weight, and movement, followed by a short demonstration with a flat brush.
When: Three Wednesdays: October 28, November 4, and November 11, 2026, at 18:00 Warsaw time (CET)
Time: 6:00 PM Warsaw time. Each session lasts 2h 15m.
Recordings: Full access to all replays for 3 months.
Level: All levels are welcome, though the class might be challenging for complete beginners.
Homework: Homework assignments are provided after sessions 1 and 2, with brief feedback on submitted work.
Curriculum
Lowercase & Rhythm
In lesson 1 you'll learn Fraktur’s basic strokes and lowercase letters, working through groups with shared shapes. We’ll focus on construction, spacing, and the rhythm of letters within words.
Capitals & Variations
In lesson 2 you'll explore Fraktur capitals step by step. We’ll look at their proportions, reuse shared structural elements to create variations, and combine capitals with lowercase writing.
Interpretation
In lesson 3 we'll experiment with weight, proportion, and scale to give your Fraktur more expression. We’ll explore extensions and shifts along the baseline, then finish with a short flat-brush demonstration.
About me
I’m a designer, letter artist, and calligrapher based in Katowice, Poland. I’m also an academic teacher at the Graphic Design Department of the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice. In 2022, I earned my Ph.D. for my work on methodology and visual systems for teaching calligraphy to graphic design students.
I conducted numerous live calligraphy workshops in Poland and other locations, including Rome, Helsinki, Bratislava, Zaragoza, and Zlín, to name a few. Additionally, since 2016, I have conducted regular calligraphy workshops for the Academy’s students. I’ve been running online classes for five years now, having the opportunity to work with students from all over the world.
