Session 1: Lowercase letters & rhythm

We’ll start with the strokes and shapes that give Fraktur its distinctive character, then work through the lowercase alphabet. Through live demonstrations, we’ll look at how the letters are built and how straight and curved strokes work together.

We’ll focus on:

• Distinctive features of Fraktur
• Basic strokes, pen angle, and letter proportions.
• Lowercase letters grouped by shared shapes.
• Common construction problems and how to correct them.
• Some letterform variations to add variety.
• Spacing and rhythm when combining letters into words.

At the end of the session, I’ll introduce your first homework assignment.
